Blood is categorized in four main groups and they are A B O and AB. They are then divided into subgroup which will show whether it is positive or negative for RhD. This will usually depend on the individual genetic makeup. For example, kids born out of parents whose blood type is both O will have O as well. But in the case where the parents have different groups, the child can take either. It should however not be ignored that a baby can be a blood group that is completely different from either of the parents.
The main difference between the blood groups is brought in by the protein type within the red blood cells surface. The blood group of a woman is very important since it has shown to influence the amount of FSH which is Follicle Stimulating Hormone. The egg normally grows in the middle of the follicle which is a tiny rounded cavity. The follicles that have mature eggs will usually push the eggs on the ovary’s surface during ovulation after which the egg drifts out. This hormone is released by Pituitary gland in the brain.
This therefore means that there are women who will take much longer to conceive as a result of their blood type since the hormone is in levels which lead to the improper releasing of the egg thus leading to fertilization. For instance, women in the blood type O have been seen to struggle more in conceiving as compared to those within the type A. The FSH is usually measured in every liter of blood and in units and a reading that is over 10 will suggest that a woman take longer to conceive.
The medical experts also believe that blood type has a way of affecting the reaction of the immune system in attempted conception. The immune system plays a vital role in the success of the process of implantation of the fertilized eggs and hence it is possible that some women will go through failed implantations this delayed pregnancies. It is therefore not a wonder that some women will go through ovulation treatments to increase their chances of conceiving sooner.
Blood type is important in pregnancy especially because of the Rhesus factor. Parents which have blood types which are not compatible in terms of the rhesus have increased risks of having a baby with health issues. The mother could also have health issues specially when her blood and that of the baby mix yet they are incompatible. It leads to the production of antibodies that end up attacking red blood cells easily leading to anemia and fetal death.
It is always a greater thing to find out your blood type and that of your partner before pregnancy since it helps in determining the possible fetal outcomes and hence if there are risks, the right medical precautions can be put in place early to save the mother and the baby especially in pregnancy and during birth when the risks of blood mixing is high.
