Your baby has gained one pound in its lifetime and looks more than a human being than ever before. He has developed all the features on his face: the mouth, nose, eyelids and eyebrows. His eyes are still shut as they are developing beneath the eyelids. He will develop much faster in the coming weeks as the “final touches” in his features continue developing.
Some of the final features include hair on his skin, which can be seen through a scan. It is essential though that you do not have many scans as it may affect the health of the baby. His hormones are developing; for a boy, testosterone and for a girl estrogen and progesterone. These will not be active until the child reaches puberty. The pancreas is also developing in this week. You can see through the scan that he is more active. For a mother though, you will be feeling this more often than not.
You still have a cute belly and many people will admire it. Even though you feel bloated, you will be feeling your best during this part of your pregnancy. Your belly is set to grow much larger and your weight will also increase, so do not worry so much about anything- however, you need to be prepared psychologically.
Make regular visits to your doctor when you are 22 weeks pregnant to track the development of your baby. You will start getting tired easily in the coming weeks. Stretch marks will begin to develop and your belly will become much bigger. For those who are carrying twins, the rate of development will be much larger. You may develop varicose veins, especially if you are always on your feet. It is not a bad thing to be on your feet, just that you need to give them rest every so often because of the pressure you pregnancy exerts on your feet.
Your body will shed less hair, so you will notice that you will have a lot more hair on your head and on your body. Usually, women think that they are growing more hair when they notice this, but it is the other way around. You will notice that you are fingernails will grow much faster as well and they may change in texture too. You may want to cut them every so often to ensure that they are manageable. The skin of a pregnant woman also looks very good at this point although some may not have the “glow.” You may notice stretch marks as well; do not worry as this is perfectly normal, ensure that you treat them with moisturizer to keep them from itching. Your nipples will grow larger and darker and you will have enlarged feet. You will have to buy new shoes to accommodate your feet. Ensure they have flat heels. This will go away after your pregnancy, so there is no need to worry about them. Finally, do not forget to eat well and exercise. As you progress through your pregnancy, you may not be able to exercise as much as you used to before you became pregnant, but exercise anyway.
